Dhantearas celebrated two days before diwali celebration. This year in 2015 it will be celebrated on Monday, 9th November. On this day we worship lord kuber god of wealth and goddess laxmi.Like Diwali is known as ‘Festival of lights’, Dhanteras (धनतेरस) is known as ‘Festival of Wealth’. It is believed that on this day Goddess Lakshmi comes down on earth and stays here for next five days. The word ‘Dhan’ literally means wealth and this festival is believed to bring in riches, good luck, light and prosperity in everybody’s life.
Story Behind this celebration:
On the day of
Dhantrayodashi, Goddess Lakshmi came out of the ocean during the churning of
the Milky Sea. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi, along with Lord Kubera who is the God of
wealth, is worshipped on the auspicious day of Trayodashi.
Main Feature of this festival:
Believe it or not the
main feature of this festival is shopping. On this day buying steel, silver or
gold is considered auspicious. Markets and malls are packed with people as they
all head out to purchase jewellery and utensils to venerate the occasion of
Dhanteras.
Why Shopping is main feature of Dhanteras ?
One of the legends centers around the 16-year-old
son of King Hima. It was predicted that that he would die on the fourth night
of his marriage.His bride who was terrified decided to do something about it.
On the expected night, she put all the gold and silver ornaments in a heap near
her husband's bedroom door and lit a lot of lamps. She then started singing and
narrat ing interesting stories the whole night. Legend has it that Yama, the
Lord of Death came in the form a snake, intending in the form a snake,
intending to bite and kill the prince, but got dazzled by the heap of gold in
front of the door and climbed on top of it. He then heard the young bride
singing and telling stories and got engrossed in it. When it was morning, he
realized that he missed the predicted time to kill the prince and slid away
.And in this way , the bride had saved her husband's life. And to this day,
people buy things made of precious metals like gold, silver, brass, copper and
keep them at home. Also lamps are lit the whole night to prevent Lord Yama from
coming and taking away a family member.

Worshiping Lord Yama:
Yam Dey is offered Deep Dan on this day. After worshipping Yam Dey, a lamp
should be lit on the entrance door facing the south direction for the whole
night Few coins and kodi are put in this lamp. 13 lamps are lighted around the
house.

Ganesha: Lord Ganesh is bathed and then anointed with sandal
paste and cloth and sweet offerings are served Incense and lamp are lit in front
of the Idol.

Dhanvantri: Lord Dhanwantari is regarded as the god of
ayurvedic medicine (Ayurveda) in the Hindu religion People pray to Dhanvantari.
Seeking good health for themselves and for others after the ritualistic worship
of bathing Him and anointing Him with vermillion and offering 9 different
grains (Navadhanya) chant the mantra below:

Meaning:
We pray to the God, who is known as Sudarshana Vasudev Dhanvantari He holds the
Kalasha full of nectar of immortality. Lord Dhanvantri removes all fears and
removes all diseases He is the well-wisher and the preserver of the three
world& Dhanvantari is like Lord Vishnu. Empowered to heal the Jiva souls-
We bow to the Lord of Ayurveda”

Lord Kubera is also worshipped ritualistically and offered fiower& After His
worship with incense sticks, lamps and sweet offerings.

स्कंदपुराण के अनुसार कार्तिक कृष्ण त्रयोदशी को प्रदोषकाल में घर के दरवाजे पर यमराज के लिए दीप देने से अकाल मृत्यु का भय खत्म होता है। इस दिन पूरे विधि- विधान से देवी लक्ष्मी और धन के देवता कुबेर की पूजा करने का विधान है। माना जाता है कि इस दिन प्रदोषकाल में लक्ष्मी जी की पूजा करने से वह घर में ही ठहर जाती हैं।

दीपदान के समय इस मंत्र का जाप करते रहना चाहिए:
मृत्युना पाशदण्डाभ्यां कालेन च मया सह।
त्रयोदश्यां दीपदानात सूर्यज: प्रीयतामिति॥
इस मंत्र का अर्थ है:
त्रयोदशी को दीपदान करने से मृत्यु, पाश, दण्ड,
काल और लक्ष्मी के साथ सूर्यनन्दन यम प्रसन्न हों। इस मंत्र के द्वारा लक्ष्मी जी भी प्रसन्न होती हैं।
